A Peek at our Family Christmas Card and a Throwback

When we were kids, our parents used to make the Christmas cards we sent out every year. Sometimes they would illustrate them, sometimes we would contribute, sometimes it was a fun family photo. My mom would always ask us, "So...what do you guys want to do for the Christmas card this year?" (in October). Seeing the archived Christmas cards as adults, I can't help but reminisce those years our parents spent with us making these little treasures to look back on.

Here are a few photos of some of my favorite throwback cards we did with our family. Sara and I drew the illustrations and my parents added the lyrics to Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. They designed it to fit a vertical tri-fold card. A one color print job, on one side! Simple and inexpensive with a personal touch.

There were many silly outtakes before we got this Christmas card photo. My dad actually holding the shutter release outside of the frame. I love the outfits they styled us in :) The final photo is now placed in a photo book we gave my dad for Father's Day, years ago.

There's one more card I wanted to share with you guys, but I can't find it :( Once I do (if I do), I will definitely post it. Each family member illustrated their version of a snowman that year.

Now that I have children, of course I want to continue this tradition with them! We've made our cards and sent them out every year, so far. Here's a little sneak peek of the ones were are working on for this year!

We explored several different drawing mediums (charcoal, colored pencil, crayon, thick and thin markers) to see which we liked best for the different snowmen. Who knew we ended up liking them all? ;)

Can't wait to share the finished cards! I'm really loving the way that they are turning out. It's definitely a fun little collaboration. These will be something that my children can look back on when they get older.

Did you receive any of our cards we sent out as a family years ago? Do you have any traditions like this you do with your kids at Christmas time? We'd love to hear about it :)

  1. such a great idea! and that christmas card that your parents set up is the coolest!

  2. Um…that is SO COOL. We never send out Christmas cards…I just figure I post enough pictures to Facebook so everyone knows what's up with us. Terrible…I know.
